Hello again, dear readers. Sorry for disappearing unannounced; sometimes reality intrudes. But let’s get right back to it!
I’m extremely skeptical of the perennial claim that anime is fading. If 2011 is anything to go by, we’re in a beautiful heyday, more satisfying in some ways than even the Akiba-kei boom of 2006-7. Creativity is in abundance. Things are good. Let’s sit back and appreciate that today, shall we?
So, without further ado, here are my picks for the ACAA, arranged by season.
Winter: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
This takes home the trophy for tight, economical storytelling. Even now, well into the age of the twelve/thirteen-episode show, most shows toddle around as if they had many more, only to crash headlong into a flaccid conclusion. Studio SHAFT didn’t waste a minute with Madoka Magica; once the ruse of the first three episodes was up, we were taken on a thrilling ride to despair and back. And at the end, like all good tragedies, there was bittersweet catharsis.
Shortlist: Hourou Musuko, Dragon Crisis!
Spring: Steins;Gate
So many adaptations crash and burn. Either that or they collapse under the weight of references to the original, a natural consequence of a market that favors hardcore fans. So Steins;Gate was a true rarity, taking its ambitious source material (conspiracies, time travel, the fate of mankind and the love of a woman — things geeks take to like a fat kid to a pudding cup) and making a TV adaptation that was faithful, thrilling, but most importantly, accessible.
Also, this.
Shortlist: Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko, Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.
Summer: Usagi Drop
For characterization and scripting, Usagi Drop is certainly nothing to sneeze at, but where it really shines is its visual direction. Rin and Daikichi live in an organic environment, full of lush colors and detail. Little things, like the fact that people change outfits, do more to vivify the world than any number of gimmicky character designs. In a medium so little-known for subtlety, in Usagi Drop subtlety is king. Or queen.
Shortlist: The Idolm@ster, Mawaru Penguindrum
Fall: Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai
In some ways Akirascuro did a better job of explaining why I like this show, but I’ll still give it a shot. If you look at the above image, it’s pretty much all there: Kobato the goth-fantasizer, unable to call on her dark persona when she has to deal with an overly-friendly stranger. On the other side is Sena, the socially awkward beauty, who wants to be loved like in the erogames she adores, but who doesn’t realize that she’s failing at it and making Kobato very uncomfortable.
It’s a beautiful schadenfreude. Haganai wins for characterization.
Shortlist: Un-Go, Last Exile: Fam the Silver Wing

December 7, 2011 at 1:49 am
I definitely agree with the Summer and Winter choices. Great post.
December 7, 2011 at 2:01 am
Thanks! Those two were probably the hardest to pick, compared to what ended up in the shortlist.
December 7, 2011 at 1:57 am
Madoka Magica -> I agree.
Steins;Gate -> You are a good person.
Tuturu remix -> Fantastic!
Bunny Drop -> I love you.
BokuTomo -> Uh, wait, what?
December 7, 2011 at 2:04 am
It was very, very hard to choose between Haganai and Un-Go. The latter is definitely BONES back in good form, in the vein of Darker Than Black. But I figured I’d go with the mysteriously charming dark horse this time.
December 7, 2011 at 2:20 am
The thing is, I was more annoyed than charmed :/
Oh well, tastes.
December 7, 2011 at 2:32 am
Fall’s trickiest, since it technically isn’t done yet. Un-Go may very well take the top seat (in my mind, outside of this competition business) depending on how its final episodes fare. One thing I notice is that I’m willing to forgive a show if it leaves a good taste in my mouth.
December 7, 2011 at 2:51 am
Oof, doing so well until the end
December 8, 2011 at 1:28 am
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the delicious tears of the more discerning.
December 7, 2011 at 2:59 am
When it comes to anime, I am not very experienced, but I do try to stay informed and I watch what looks interesting. Madoka Magica didn’t have a complex plot nor was it flawless but it had good drama and, I admit it, gave me one of the most powerful emotional response an anime ever gave me.
I was thrilled by the promise of taking the subject of single parenting (is it the right saying?), but Usagi Drop didn’t go really far with it. It had Rin being cute and people being nice to each other. It was a disappointment but I still like it (who could hate Rin? Damn you, moe!).
However, I can’t help but compare anime with the material I am given by the western media and be frustrated.
Anime has been very creative lately, no question. But my feeling is that it doesn’t try hard enough to give me a serious show. It doesn’t dare enough. Even shows that claim to go beyond imposed models still have fairly classical characters. Moe is inevitable, not that there’s something wrong with it, but it’s used so often that it doesn’t mean anything to me anymore. Animation is a wonderful tool that allows you to create anything you want. Use it! SHAFT understood that and gave us shows with unique visuals. I am not asking for down to Earth plots, I’m asking for something more consistent that cute girls that are here because it’s a rule.
PS: Sorry I transformed this post into a rant. I guess I’m frustrated.
December 8, 2011 at 1:34 am
You say you’re inexperienced, and yet you’re full of passion!
Welcome.
There’s a young man named Akira who shares many of your opinions about “daring.” You might find him interesting: http://2dteleidoscope.wordpress.com/2011/11/23/a-personal-note-26-the-new-art-of-the-off-kai/
Even so, I think we’ve been lucky. Every year there’s at least one anime that pushes the boundaries. Last year it was Tatami Galaxy, this year I suppose it was Madoka (or Redline).
December 7, 2011 at 3:00 am
I like BokuTomo too but I have to admit I am surprised you picked it as the best of this season. Just wanted to clarify which title you picked as your favourite for the year?
December 8, 2011 at 12:11 am
Ah… Right.
Let’s go with Madoka. I’m all for supporting original work.
December 7, 2011 at 4:05 am
Great choices, and thanks for sharing these with us
It’ll be fun seeing the results of all those participating in the ACAA. Our choices are pretty similar, and the only major differences I see are due to me not having yet finished S;G and a rearrangement of ordering. Haganai came so, so close to making my list but lost to nostalgia.
Oh, and I love the image for MSMM~
December 12, 2011 at 3:07 am
I noticed.
Love your Last Exile posts!
December 7, 2011 at 6:56 am
Was not prepared for the last picture, hehe.
December 12, 2011 at 3:07 am
But it’s nothing if not well-placed, no?
December 7, 2011 at 7:53 am
All of those shows are excellent. Some may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but they were/are delicious to me.
But what about Kimi ni Todoke (2nd season) for Winter? Tiger & Bunny in Spring? They don’t even get in the short list?
December 12, 2011 at 3:09 am
I never did get around to watching more of Tiger and Bunny. That’s actually what made this list kind of hard — I don’t watch nearly enough anime!
December 7, 2011 at 8:37 am
Interesting choice with Haganai. I actually agree with the point that the characterization is good but I always feel like the character’s troubles are superfluous. The series doesn’t want trouble to be bad enough so that it’s tragic but it doesn’t want it to be good enough to be comfortable either. It either doesn’t take the character’s troubles serious enough by making them part of a comedy or the series addresses troubles one usually wouldn’t call ‘troubles’. Haganai just wants to entertain the audience with its characters.
But I think my list of favourites for the rest of the seasons would look similar.
December 12, 2011 at 3:11 am
A perfectly fair criticism. This may very well be a case of newness goggles.
December 7, 2011 at 10:36 am
Yes, yes, yes and wha…?
Perhaps I could agree with you on the basis of Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai’s first two episodes, but sadly I thought the show plummeted after the remaining cast was introduced. Besides, any series that has Charlie Sheen’s Macedonian equivalent embarking on an epic journey for glory, grails and pants has is a shoo-in for my vote.
December 12, 2011 at 3:14 am
Hmm… You know, I’ve been enjoying Fate Zero quite a bit, but I think it’s still quite flawed. Glad you like it, though!
December 7, 2011 at 11:01 am
I’d go …
Winter > Level E
Spring > Steins;Gate
Summer > Mawaru Penguindrum
Fall > Un-Go
Can’t really argue with any of your choices, though. Haven’t watched Boku etc. so I have no real objection there.
December 9, 2011 at 8:29 am
Was Level E this year?! Felt like I watched that ages ago! Totally great and underrated show, sad that there’s probably little chance of either the anime or manga getting licensed.
December 12, 2011 at 3:14 am
Level E! Another show I never did finish.
December 19, 2011 at 8:54 am
Ah, you should if you ever have the time! The ending is very much worth it.
December 7, 2011 at 11:25 am
Winter – Madoka Magica
Spring – Nichijou
Summer – Natsume Yuujinchou San/Usagi Drop
Fall – Kimi to Boku/Un-Go/Mirai Nikki (not sure which one yet)
I haven’t watched Steins Gate or Tamayura. :/
December 12, 2011 at 3:16 am
If Nichijou was composed entirely of its YouTube clips, I’d totally agree.
December 12, 2011 at 11:17 am
Why would it be better that way?
December 12, 2011 at 11:37 am
Because when Nichijou was “on,” it was really super on! And when it wasn’t… was about half the show. For me, anyway.
December 7, 2011 at 12:38 pm
It’s unfortunate that summer represents a big gaping hole in my viewing this year, otherwise I could give it a shot.
December 12, 2011 at 3:17 am
Well, maybe minus summer, but give it a try anyway! I’m interested in your picks.
December 7, 2011 at 1:34 pm
Not a sniff of Fate/Zero? That’d be my last pick. Although I think Winter had the two best shows all year.
December 7, 2011 at 4:35 pm
Lol same opinion as me. If fall = fate/zero, I think this list would be pretty much perfect for me, since I pretty much agree with the other choices ;D But Boku Tomodachi…… o.O
December 12, 2011 at 3:19 am
Nah. Its imperfections aside, I also tried to avoid shows that aren’t even close to done.
December 7, 2011 at 4:23 pm
Since everyone else is doing it…
Winter – Hourou Musuko
Spring – Steins;Gate/Tiger and Bunny
Summer – Natsume Yuujincho-san
Fall – Ben-to (as long as it can pull off a strong finish) or Chihayafuru
alternately:
Winter – Fairy Tail
Spring – Gintama’ (with a side of Fairy Tail, Toriko and Beelzebub)
Summer – Gintama’ (with a side of Fairy Tail, Toriko, and Beelzebub)
Fall – Gintama’ (with a side of Fairy Tail, Toriko, and Beelzebub)
Safe to say Gintama returning was the best thing that happened all year. Shounen does the body good.
December 7, 2011 at 4:37 pm
Gintama was totally the saving grace during summer’s list of godawful anime T__T
December 12, 2011 at 3:21 am
Chihayafuru! Another show that I completely forget until every time someone mentions how great it is.
Would you recommend Gintama for a fellow who doesn’t especially feel like slogging through a giant backlog?
December 12, 2011 at 12:42 pm
Gintama has a wealth of quirky characters that it picks and chooses from to spice up any given plot in the show. A lot of the jokes come from knowing those characters and their quirks…so probably not if you haven’t watched ANY episodes, but if you’ve watched like 40ish episodes you might be okay. However I would hardly call watching old episodes of Gintama slogging. At worst I’ve only laughed at Gintama once per episode. The serious arcs are really awesome as well. Maybe check out the Benizakura-hen movie first. It’s just a recap of the first major arc.
December 7, 2011 at 6:51 pm
I’ve got no complaints about this list except for the astonishing lack of Fate/Zero and Chihayafuru. Not even a mention? What gives?
In other words, stop disliking shows I like, you horrible person.
December 12, 2011 at 3:24 am
I haven’t seen Chihayafuru. I’ll get on it, don’t worry!
December 7, 2011 at 8:00 pm
When people say that anime has gotten worse over the years, what they really mean is that generic giant robot shows have been replaced by generic moe shows, and they don’t like that.
December 12, 2011 at 3:25 am
Shhh. You’ll stir up the alley cats.
December 7, 2011 at 8:08 pm
I’m fascinated by The honorable mention for Dragon Crisis! A series that seemed to receive little mention, & one that I found rather underwhelming, particularly its characterisation. I did find the 1st episode fun, & the picture episode an interesting idea poorly played, but appeared very bland otherwise. Curious whether I should give it another chance, or if it’s merely commentary on the state of 2011 Winter anime.
In a medium so little-known for subtlety, in Usagi Drop subtlety is king. Or queen
Reading this comment warmed my heart. Usagi Drop was such a subtly, delightfully pleasing anime to watch. Rather then preach, it generally settled for simply portraying the variety of wonders & difficulties of parenting, and its visual subtlety is just another example of the series’ quiet, endearing charm.
I did not give Haganai a chance after giving up on the manga, which I found a little too over-the-top & repetitive for my taste. Both your past & present comments, however, have caused me to reconsider my decision. . . .
Much Thanks for your review of the anime of the past year–it was fun to look back it & hear your thoughts.
December 12, 2011 at 3:27 am
Dragon Crisis was inexplicably entertaining against all my better instincts. I can’t even attempt a rationale.
December 7, 2011 at 8:54 pm
Woooo I love the choices for your favorites over the seasons, and with the current Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai! Man this series is so hilarious and I would agree it wins for characters easily, there are some interesting ones and a few crazy ones like Rika <3
December 12, 2011 at 3:30 am
Apparently it’s making good headway in the competition, too. So many tsundere fans.
December 8, 2011 at 6:39 pm
I can’t say I agree with Haganai being up there, but then again I’d count Penguindrum in both Summer and Fall slots. As for Madoka Magica, for all its faults it’s certainly deserving. Had one of the most tightly paced stories I’ve seen in awhile, yet it didn’t feel skimpy.
That’s all I can say, really, anybody who says that anime’s gone stagnant isn’t looking hard enough for series to prove them wrong.
December 12, 2011 at 3:34 am
I was tempted to put Penguindrum up in the summer slot… But besides the fact that I haven’t kept up with it, Steins;Gate just had that special something.
December 8, 2011 at 11:22 pm
It is my goal to at the end of the year do a top 4, not by season, but just my Best Four. My progression is obvious so far
Winter > Madoka
Spring >Steins;Gate (my #1 of the year)
Fall > Fate/Zero
…I still haven’t finished or caught up on any Summer anime that I particularly favor, though Steins;Gate was still on TV then.
December 12, 2011 at 3:39 am
The seasonal setup was pretty torturous… Especially when some two-cour shows were great in one season and not so much in the next!
December 9, 2011 at 2:39 pm
Mawaru Penguindrum was without a doubt my favorite show of the year–absolutely insane, and kind of flawed, but ultimately a true original. Madoka Magica comes very close, though, for pretty much the same reasons you listed here. I’m surprised by how many people on the internet despise it, though!
Still have to watch Steins;Gate and Hourou Musuko, since I’ve heard some pretty amazing things about both shows. Fate/Zero and Un-Go are both great, although I don’t see either show breaking into my favorites (although Un-Go is a much needed antidote to Guilty Crown, to be fair) Then there’s Ben-to, which is not in any way a classic but has been really fun throughout (although it’s regressed a bit in recent weeks)
Yeah, this has been a great year for anime, hasn’t it?
December 12, 2011 at 11:40 am
Steins;Gate is an achievement. It builds slowly and steadily, until everything’s gone to hell and you understand exactly why. You should see it!
Excellent year. I’m glad to be around.
December 9, 2011 at 3:38 pm
No mention of Fate/Zero, Persona, Chihayafuru, Nichijou, Tiger and Bunny, or Mirai Nikki? But yes, there’s quite a few winners this year.
I think a lot of the complaints about “the decline of anime” started around the early/mid 2000s where you saw a lot of stylistic shifts but also behinds the scenes shifts in methods of production like using computer use and overseas outsourcing of animated segments – and many shows in the 2000s feature a similar sort of lighting scheme and general aesthetic. Many of these elements have kind of hit a certain maturity now and there’s a lot more emphasis on the overall aesthetic of a show to differentiate it from the competition, or situate it within some sort of tradition.
But I think on the flip side there’s a whole new crop of subbing groups compared to the early 2000s, and the wider spread of the ‘net, streaming sites, etc. means that shows have much more widespread viewership and wider discussion on airing shows. So in a sense complaints about the “decline of anime” was always a sort of narrow view informed by the tiny slice that people could access.
December 9, 2011 at 4:39 pm
Persona to me isn’t all that interesting, the game is certainly better. I’m only watching it just to listen to their Jap voices, lol.
December 12, 2011 at 11:47 am
You know, I can admit this to you, but I’m actually hesitant to watch Mirai Nikki. I’m not sure why that is.
There’s definitely more energy nowadays in the community compared to 200… 8 or so. I can feel it. How nice to be in an upward trend!
December 10, 2011 at 10:06 pm
Ah yes, I still have to write my post before the deadline. I think it’ll be close to yours though, the ones that stood out made a huge impact this year.
December 12, 2011 at 11:48 am
I see it!
At first I thought “hey, his choices are nothing like mine!” but then I realized you put the time into writing about all three places for each season.
Lovely work!
December 10, 2011 at 11:06 pm
2011 was my first year watching anime weekly.
Winter – Madoka > Wandering Son > Level E > Gosick
Spring – Steins;Gate > Tiger & Bunny > Ano Hana > Hanasaku Iroha
Summer – Usagi Drop = Penguin Drum > Natsume San > Ikoku Meiro
Fall – Fate/Zero > Chihayafuru > Last Exile : Fam > Bento (ep 1-6)
December 12, 2011 at 11:54 am
Is this the first time you’ve commented? I think it is!
Welcome!
I love that our top choices are pretty much the same. It’s when we have to decide between winners that things get more nuanced, eh?
Thanks for reading!
December 12, 2011 at 5:08 pm
“I’m extremely skeptical of the perennial claim that anime is fading. [...]” This is exactly what I’ve been feeling more and more this year! It’s so good to read that an authority on anime thinks the same way!
Sure, I miss the hand-drawn shows of the 90s. SciFi turned from avant-garde to retro over the years and girls no longer watch Sailor Moon to learn how to grow up. But still – not since the days of Tokidoki Balloon has anime been so thriving. We even have two-cour shows back!
Here’s my list:
Winter – Hourou Musuko > Madoka > Gosick (2nd half was better)
Spring – Hyouge Mono > HanaIro > AnoHana
Summer – Usagi Drop > Blood-C > Dantalian
Fall – Last Exile II > Penguindrum > UN-GO
If I had to choose one of these, I would go for Hourou Musuko. It could also be Hyouge Mono of which unfortunately I could only watch eight episodes so far for lack of subs.
I second the commentators above who wondered about your choice of Haganai. Ep. 1 was cool but after that it felt a bit exhausted to me. But then again, I liked Sengoku Otome and Nekogami Yaoyorozu so each his/ her own!
December 14, 2011 at 12:36 am
First I’m an “old-time anime blogger,” now I’m an “authority.” My world is turning upside down!
Excellent choices. I couldn’t give Hourou Musuko the top spot (because I’m utterly biased toward the manga), but I’ve heard great things about Hyouge Mono.
So glad to see another fan of T̶̳̫̯̣̜͖̞ͪͪ̈́̈̾͌͒̕o̤̰̟̥̦̳̘ͤ͐͐̽̈́̽̒́k̯̩̃ͣͬi̴̠̫̹͚̭̱ͮ̌̆ͤ͘ḓ̡̨̮͙͕̾̋ơ̞̠͔̼͑͑̀ͣ̆̎͗ͬ͟ḱ̓̓ͤ͐̚̕͏̸̝͚̗̟ī͎̻̱̰͚̬̼̻̔̂͑͌̌̊ͨ͛ ̢͇̝̀̚͘B̨̺̱̹͉ͪ̿͞a̺͎̯͙̰͋ͥ̿ͬ͜l̸̞̯͚̟̍ͨ͞l̤̗̭͈͖̩̀̋̚o̦̺̩̫̬̺̭̎ͭͫ̀͢ͅơ͈͔̋ͣ͠n̷͕̬̜̮͔̆̽̍ͨ̽͐ͩ̀̂͟!̵͈ͬ̄̆̿ͮ̽͌ͤ̀͝
December 16, 2011 at 1:53 am
2DT, I do prefer the Hourou Musuko manga, as well! The somewhat childish and awkward looking drawing style expresses so much of the half-angsty, half-carefree world I remember to have lived in myself at that age.
What makes Hourou Musuko so outstanding to me is the character of Saorin, whom I can relate a lot to, personally. The characters and the story, I admit, are not anime original. However, I luckily watched the anime first and my #1 is based on the impact it had on me.
In any case, I think the anime deserves to be judged in its own right. I think it did an astonishing job in adapting the manga without simply copying the drawings. Just think of the timing of the very last scenes and the ED’s in eps 3 and 4!

I’m not too surprised about Haganai. It is a good, enjoyable series. I think it would have been 3rd place in my choices if Fate/zero had not aired this season.
And I really should check out Steins;Gate, since I keep seeing it all around on ACAA posts! I may do a marathon over winter break. ^_^
